Buenos Aires - Dish

Ole, Argentina Ole, Argentina
Since internationally inclined Buenes Aires embraces Mexican fare, we located a favorite local spot in the prime of Palermo. Called La Flor Azteca, this classic eatery — serving the anticipated quesadillas, tostadas, burritos, guacamole, and, of course, margaritas — is owned by a native son, ’70s and ’80s film director Enrique Guevara. The place looks cinematic, with plenty of color and loads of atmosphere. At the end of the meal, trade Mexican for Argentinean and dip into the dulce de leche dessert. Psst: Book a table on the weekend if you want to witness a lively Mariachi show.

Among BA parillas (grills), La Cabrera proves top choice, with each cut of beef done to perfection. The selection of dishes runs the gamut, from New York to Argentine, but we say enjoy where you are and choose the Argentinian Bife de Chorizo. We also heartily recommend Mollejitas Grilladas (grilled gizzards), served with chunky lemon wedges, side salads, and veggies. The setting is contemporary but not stiff, and tourists mingle freely with Porteños (those who live in this port city). One caveat: As there are no reservations, arrive early — which, in BA, means before 11 p.m.

Fish Do Fry Fish Do Fry
A former warehouse, Olsen is large by every measure. Offering Argentina’s biggest selection of Scandinavian-style seafood (fried oysters being a favorite), a bar dispensing BA’s vast varieties of vodka (at least 50), and the biggest number of English-speaking staffers among the city’s most popular restaurants. Sunday brunch is a must, to be savored amid a mod ’60s feel, funky plates with circle patterns, and a round metal fireplace in the middle of the main room. Such appetizers as smoked salmon, baby pancakes, and smoked herring are served family style, and an overgrown garden patio lets some lucky patrons sit outside as tables and chairs literally sink into the verdant grounds. Suggestion: Lean toward the seafood rather than Olsen’s meat dishes in this very fishy eatery.
