Housed in what was originally an elaborate theater built in 1919 and called the Grand Splendid, the Recoleta-area El Ateneo Bookstore is something to write home about. Books have never looked as good as they do here, where the ground floor holds the bulk of a vast collection with the memorable building’s basement supporting music of all sorts. The second floor is reserved for heady pursuits (like science), and the still-intact theater boxes that flank the stage offer comfortable seating and a very special place to read.

Calle Florida is the shopping street in BA, and Galerias Pacifico is the up-market mall-of-the-moment. Its fine stores run the gamut from leather goods to designer frocks and equestrian gear, and its surroundings are as attractive as the merchandise. At the center is an elaborate fountain underneath a frescoed ceiling that would make Michelangelo proud.

Oldies But Goodies Oldies But Godies
Fronting San Telmo’s Plaza Dorrego, antique shops attract with every manner of memorabilia, particularly curios of European Art Deco lineage. However, Gabriel del Campo is especially diverse for BA and sells everything from ancient marble statues and vintage Bugatti motorcycles to massive abstract paintings and Christ statues in every size and from every era. Precious luggage is also prolific here, as evidenced by the glorious abundance of mid-20th-century Louis Vuitton trunks. Not to be overlooked: Old-school neon theater lights, for the glamour queen in your house.
