Artful Sins Artful Sins
When the Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas Hotel debuted in December 2009, so did an ode to modern art in Sin City. Frank Stella, Henry Moore, and Nancy Rubins are all represented in the opulent Asian hotel’s celebrated collection. So is an in-your-face Claes Oldenburg/Goosje Bruggen outdoor sculpture, which greets you as you enter this snazzy new Nevada retreat. Standing there is a four-ton, 19-foot stainless steel and fiberglass rendering of a big, bright, old-school typewriter eraser — a sure bet for inspiring any aspiring writer.

Pool and Posh Pool and Posh
Once checked in, we could hardly move beyond the lobby of the Ritz-Carlton, Lake Las Vegas, in Henderson. There, amid a highly civilized conversation spot to take tea is a shiny new pool table. After a few games, we ventured on to enjoy other amenities, including an enticing outdoor swimming pool and a serene man-made lake — complete with gondola rides and a dramatic waterfall. Reminiscent of Florence, this sprawling and luxurious Ritz-Carlton — located 20 minutes from the dizzying (yet still easily accessible) Las Vegas Strip — offers a sumptuous taste of Italy and even furnishes its own Ponte Vecchio. This bridge-like section of the hotel is home to the best rooms in the house and a private lounge for elite guests, where Champagne flows all day long.

Room for Two Room for Two
Tired of tiny hotel bathrooms? Every bathroom at Wynn Las Vegas is incredibly large (possibly the largest in Vegas) with double sinks, separate showers, and flat-screen TVs (in case you don’t want to miss out on your favorite soap while you soap). Traveling with a friend or significant other? You’ll definitely appreciate the extra space. Other perks at Wynn: a deluxe bed and lots of mirrors, both of which ensure that you are ready for a winning night on the town.

Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
Widely considered the “Father of Modern Vegas,” the Mirage Hotel and Casino — with its erupting signature volcano out front — has been a mainstay on the Strip since 1989, literally offering something for everyone. Kids flock to Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden to view the new tiger cubs, while Beatlemaniacs, young and old, line up for Love, the Fab Four-inspired Cirque du Soleil show performed only at the Mirage. Dining options abound, whether you want a burger and alcoholic milkshake (at BLT Burger), authentic New York deli fare (at Carnegie Deli), upscale Chinese cuisine at reasonable prices (at Fin), or cocktails (at Beatles Revolution Lounge). Grooviest part of this lasting, saucy spot? The 30,000 dichroic crystals adorning the ceiling.

Looking to stay off the Strip to save some serious coin and curb the hectic pace? Then travel 7 miles to the Eastside Cannery, the first new hotel built on the Boulder Highway. On tap: low-risk fun (like $5 blackjack) and the latest in slot machines. The Cannery has something for serious gamblers, too. Look for the small collection of draw poker machines, where, if played correctly, give you slight odds over the house.

Vegas Oasis Vegas Oasis
Part of the Mandalay Bay complex, THEhotel is the very antithesis of what you’d expect to find on the Las Vegas Strip. This 43-story retreat offers impeccable service. Check-in is a breeze, attention from the staff is non-stop, and the lobby is so stylish you’ll want to linger a while. And if being at THEhotel at Mandalay Bay means being there for work, don’t fret: In a city where walking to the next meeting can mean a half-hour of your time even when you are working and staying under the same roof, the helpful THEhotel offers special accommodations on business floors directly across from conference and function space.

The Donald’s Deal The Donald’s Deal
The Apprentice host usually isn’t associated with an understated bargain, but the 64-story Trump Hotel Las Vegas started in 2008 as high-end condos, only to be dealt the same hand in the economic crunch as the rest of the country. This luxurious lodging’s salvation was to turn its units into plush hotel rooms, outfitted with smartly equipped kitchens and bathroom shower stalls for two at a price more enticing than the clink-a-ching of the slot machines. There’s no casino, but there’s a comfy lobby bar with a happy hour and a menu that will satisfy dinner appetites, and a spa that rivals those in Europe. The location may be just off the Strip, but you can walk right into the Neiman Marcus shopping mall directly across the street. Soaking In the Night Life Soaking In the Night Life
What a conversation piece: An oval bathtub sits in the middle of the floor in Palms Place’s one-bedroom condos overlooking the Strip. How it got out of the bathroom is unknown, but it certainly takes a turn from the hip/sophisticated vibe flowing through the new tower retreat located adjacent to the original Palms Hotel. The one-bedroom units (counting Jessica Simpson among investors) are tailored for a party of 10 to 20. Go smaller (studio) or larger (two-bedroom) to suit your needs. If you prefer, a translucent glass pane slides over to cordon off the bathtub. The message is clear: Privacy is optional. 4381 W. Flamingo Road (702) 932-7777 www.palmsplace.com — J.P.

Change of Pace Change of Pace
Modern and contemporary, the Red Rock Casino, Resort & Spa still exudes that old Vegas flair. A big plus: You can check in without ever passing a slot machine. And while you’re there, don’t forget to look up — the lobby and bar chandeliers feature more than three million pieces of Swarovski crystal. Be sure to take advantage of the resort’s Adventure Spa experience, where we hiked, biked, and rode horseback through breathtaking Red Rock Canyon National Park. 11011 W.
